Sensory Circuits
School Corridor Implementation
What is Sensory Integration?
Sensory integration refers to the process by which the brain organises and interprets sensory information from the environment, such as sights, sounds, touch, taste, smell, and movement. This process enables individuals to make sense of the sensory stimuli they encounter and to respond appropriately to their environment.
In the context of occupational therapy and developmental psychology, sensory integration is particularly important for understanding how people, especially children, process sensory information. Effective sensory integration allows a person to navigate and function in daily life, coordinating movements, maintaining balance, and responding to sensory inputs in a way that is appropriate to the situation.
When sensory integration is not functioning optimally, it can lead to difficulties in performing everyday tasks, managing emotions, and interacting socially. These challenges are often seen in conditions such as Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), where the brain may struggle to process and integrate sensory information effectively.
What is a sensory circuit for?
A targeted set of physical activities designed to help children regulate their sensory input, allowing them to reach an optimal level of alertness for learning. This process involves a structured sequence: alerting, organising & calming exercises. When done correctly, it helps children focus better, feel more balanced, and engage more effectively in the classroom.
FAQ's
Alerting
To activate the brain by delivering targeted vestibular and proprioceptive input, energising the child and priming them for learning and school activities.
Example activities: Hopping, skipping, running, stepping, star jumps, and similar dynamic exercises.
Organising
This section features activities that challenge motor sensory processing, balance, and timing. These exercises are designed to enhance focus and attention by requiring the child to coordinate their movements, plan their actions, and execute multiple tasks in a specific sequence.
Example activities: Children may navigate balance activities, complete a series of coordinated jumps, or follow a sequence of hand-eye coordination tasks. They might perform stepping patterns on floor markers or walk heel-to-toe on a narrow path. These help reinforce their ability to organise and plan their actions.
Calming
The calming activities play a crucial role in helping children transition smoothly from the circuit back to the classroom. These exercises provide soothing sensory input that helps the child feel calm, centered, and prepared for the day ahead.
Example activities: Children might participate in controlled breathing exercises, slow stretches, or performing gentle yoga poses help to ground and relax them before returning to class.

Sensory Circuit Case Study
Dromore Central Primary School has had a sensory motor room for several years, managed by Mrs. Amanda Dillon, the Learning Support Teacher. Recognising the benefits of additional sensory activities for students, the school wanted to enhance their sensory motor room by creating a sensory circuit in the corridor leading to it. This extension aimed to provide children with a sensory trail to help them focus and regulate before engaging in more structured exercises in the sensory motor room.

FAQ's
Can a Sensory Circuit be incorporated into mainstream curriculum?
Sensory circuits can be seamlessly integrated into the mainstream school curriculum as part of regular movement breaks outside the classroom. By incorporating these circuits, schools provide all students with an opportunity to engage in purposeful physical activities that support sensory processing.
This approach not only helps enhance focus and readiness for learning but also promotes overall well-being and engagement for every child. Sensory circuits offer a valuable way to address diverse sensory needs and ensure that all students benefit from structured, beneficial movement throughout their school day.
How can I customise a Sensory Circuit to fit different age groups?
To customise a sensory circuit for different age groups, adjust the complexity and nature of the activities based on the developmental stage of the children. For younger children, focus on simpler, more straightforward tasks that align with their physical and cognitive abilities. As children grow older, incorporate more challenging activities that require greater coordination, balance, and sequencing skills. Tailoring the circuit to match the age and needs of the children ensures that the activities are both appropriate and effective, providing meaningful sensory experiences for each developmental stage.
How can I measure the effectiveness of a sensory circuit?
To measure the effectiveness of a sensory circuit, observe and document changes in student behaviour, focus, and engagement before and after using the circuit. Look for improvements in attention, reduced restlessness, and better participation in classroom activities. Collect feedback from students and teachers to assess how well the circuit is meeting individual sensory needs. Additionally, track any changes in emotional regulation and overall well-being. Regular evaluation and adjustments based on these observations and feedback will help ensure the sensory circuit remains effective and beneficial.
